The pro-con diagram excels at listing and categorizing reasons for or against a choice, yet it remains static. It cannot delve into the underpinning or nuance of a decision because the list itself cannot distinguish between a significant choice and a superficial one, or a genuine crisis and a minor inconvenience. Thus, the diagram cannot provide the tools necessary for that depth of assessment.
To discern is to understand the underlying principles, values, and long-term implications of a decision. While a pro-con diagram presents points in isolation—failing to capture how these factors connect or impact the whole—true discernment looks at the entire landscape.
Because discernment incorporates experience and accumulated wisdom, it relies on qualitative aspects that are neither quantifiable nor easy to represent on a paper list. Each true decision carries inherent ethical and moral weight. Discernment must contend with these deeper dimensions, considering what is right, just, and ultimately aligns with God.
