Often presented as an advanced or sophisticated decision-support tool that promises efficiency and objectivity, it presents a frozen moment, lacking the dynamic process of evolving thoughts. Technology is undeniably useful for decision-making because of the raw material it provides–the input for consideration. It can gather, process, and analyze vast quantities of data far beyond human capacity, identifying patterns, correlations, and potential consequences. It excels at optimization, predicting mechanical outcomes, sorting variables with absolute consistency, and uncovering structural insights that would take a human lifetime to compile. However, the output is mistaken for discernment, masquerading wisdom in data points that extend far beyond the limits of the tool. While the technology can present arguments, it cannot impart the wisdom and insight needed to evaluate them. To make truly ethical choices, one needs empathy, a grasp of context beyond simple data, and a moral sense that current algorithms lack.
